New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stepped into the debate on judicial appointments and said the time has come for introspection to ensure that judicial appointments at all levels live up to exacting standards.
The PM was speaking at the release of ex-chief justice of India PN Bhagwati's book, Judicial Reflections of Justice Bhagwati, in New Delhi and his remarks comes just two days after Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan recommended that Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court be impeached.
"The time has come for introspection to ensure that judicial appointments at all levels live up to the exacting standards we associate with the name of Justice Bhagwati," Manmohan said.
CJI Balakrishnan has also given the go ahead to the Central Bureau of Investigation to question two sitting judges of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on charges of graft - the case being a first in India's judicial history.
"People judge an institution by what it does, and how it impacts their life. Perceptions are formed about efficiency, about fairness, about honesty and integrity and about competence and compassion. These perceptions cannot be willed. They are shaped by experience, by hearsay and by public debate and discourse," the Prime Minister.
He also lauded Justice Bhagwati for pioneering the concept of Public Interest Litigation.
