Several political parties on Monday opposed the construction of a water tank for the Cauvery Integrated Drinking Water Project at the Government Higher Secondary School in Gudiyatham.
Various political party leaders led by SM Devaraj of Congress, S S Sampathkuar of CPM, N Panneer of MDMK, H Rahamadullah Khan of Muslim League and K Suyaraj of Janata Dal protested in front of the Gudiyattam New Bus Stand.
Earlier, Gudiyattam AIADMK cadre led by the town secretary and the school’s Parents-Teachers Association President GKN Palani had sent a letter to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa requesting her to shift the site for the tank.
The letter stated the proposed tanks and the motor room would occupy about half the playground which was being utilised for state-level and district-level sports events. It would affect development of sports in the area and the general people as well who do their morning walks at the school ground.
