New Delhi: The panel on tobacco control headed by BJP MP Dilip Gandhi on Thursday rejected the Health Ministry's view of packets containing big pictorial warnings.

According to the documents accessed by CNN-IBN, the panel rejected the ministry's view that pictorial warnings on tobacco packages won't hit the livelyhood of Beedi makers.

Gandhi wrote to Health Minister JP Nadda asking for pictorial warnings to be put on hold. Playing along, the Health Ministry dealt with the notice by going against the advice of their own legal consultant.

An internal note written by the ministry's legal consultant available with CNN-IBN shows that the letter by Dilip Gandhi to the minister cannot be termed equivalent to recommendation of the committee.

Documents also show that the Director of Tobacco control Program of the ministry also recommended referring the matter to the Union Law Ministry.

Meanwhile, Beedi baron Shyam Charan Gupta was re-nominated to tobacco committee.
