England, who won the Ashes after a gap of 16 years, are touring Pakistan for a three-match Test series and five ODIs.

New Delhi: Danish Kaneria took four English wickets to power Pakistan to a 22-run victory in the first Test Match in Multan.

The tourists needing 198 runs to win after resuming at their overnight total of 24 for the loss of one wicket were bowled out for 175 runs.

Starting the day on England looked to be cruising to victory as Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell added 40 runs in quick time.

It was only the third defeat in 22 matches for an England team touring Pakistan and followed the first English series win against Australia since 1987 in September.

England must win the final two matches to extend its series-winning streak to seven.

The second Test begins on November 20 in Faisalabad before a third match in Lahore from in November 29.

Geraint Jones top-scored for the visitors with 33 before being bowled by Shoaib Akhtar.
