New York: A man has been detained in connection with the failed Times Square car bombing in New York, the FBI said early on Tuesday.
Richard Kolko, an FBI spokesman, said, "A person has been detained in the investigation."
A law enforcement source said the suspect was arrested trying to leave the country.
The New York Times reported the Connecticut man is a naturalized US citizen from Pakistan. The Times report cited two people briefed on the investigation.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, was thought to be the person who recently purchased the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was found containing a car bomb made of gasoline, propane, fireworks and fertilizer, The Times reported.
A street vendor tipped off police on Saturday about the presence of the vehicle. Times Square, the well-known entertainment and shopping area in Midtown Manhattan, was packed with tourists and theater-goers on a warm Saturday evening.
