Starting Monday, it will be possible for you to rent a bicycle online and use it within the campus of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) thanks to the efforts of ‘Namma Cycle’, a public bicycling initiative.
A joint initiative of the Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) and the Ride a Cycle Foundation, the project has been funded by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM). At the flagging off ceremony held on Monday, BBMP Commissioner M K Shankaralinge Gowda said that they had contributed close to `5 Lakh for the project.
Interested users can log onto www.nammacycle.in and select a renting scheme based on their requirements. Also available are monthly and half yearly passes as well as pre-paid tickets of `100. The first 30 minutes of renting the bicycle will be free and `5 will be charged for every hour thereafter.
Initially there will be four renting stations at the Security Gate, New Hostel Block, D Gate and Centenary Guest House. Users can also register themselves at a counter at the CiSTUP which is near the Maramma Circle entrance of IISc. Speaking at the flagging off ceremony on Monday, Shankarlinge Gowda said, “The next phase of the project would be adopt a similar system in Jayanagar where we have already finished the process of marking cycle lanes.” R Murali of Ride a Cycle Foundation added that the Jayanagar project would be implemented in the next 15-20 days.
The total budget for the project is `30 lakhs and includes various stakeholders besides BESCOM and BBMP. A total of 150 cycles will be inducted into the project and the next phase plans on adding 50 more cycles to the current strength of 40.
