NHRC seeks report from Delhi government on deaths near a shelter home
The NHRC has called for reports from the Delhi government on the death of two homeless persons near a shelter home in East Delhi.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has called for reports from the Delhi government on the death of two homeless persons near a shelter home in East Delhi. The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that two homeless persons were found dead at a distance of 30 to 40 feet in Yamuna Pusta area on January 1, 2014.

Reportedly, the night shelter is only two to three minutes walking distance from where the bodies were recovered. However, many homeless people are turned away as there is no space at the shelter home.

The Commission has observed that the press report, if true, raises a serious question of violation of human rights of the homeless persons in Delhi. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary, Secretary, Department of Social Welfare and the Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, Government of NCT of Delhi calling for reports within four weeks.

They have also been directed to inform the Commission about the steps taken to protect the poor homeless persons from cold.
