News briefs: Lucknow Mahotsav to start from November 25
Lucknow Mahotsav will be organised from November 25 to December 5 at the Regional Park, Sector L, Ashiana here. Divisional commissioner Sanjiv Saran announced the dates of the annual cultural extravaganza during a meeting of the Mahotsav organising committee on Wednesday. While chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will inaugurate the event, Governor BL Joshi will officially bring the curtains down on the event. Last year, the district administration earned a profit of R1.55 crore. It spent R3.24 crore on the fest while it earned R4.80 crore through sale of tickets and advertisements.

Lucknow: LU researcher bags recognition from Cambridge University

A Lucknow University (LU) researcher, who is working on enhancing the performance of LCD screens, has bagged a prestigious award from a summer school at Cambridge University. Dharmendra Pratap Singh is the first Indian to bag the coveted award started by the university in 2009, claimed LU authorities. A senior research fellow in LU’s department of physics, Singh’s poster (scientific presentation) was adjudged the best from among the four presented by young scientists from different countries. The jury for the award comprised top scientists at the Cambridge University.

Lucknow: Students to have real feel of UP’S cultural tapestry

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM-L) is hosting the state convention of Spic Macay from August 9 to 11. The convention is organised with an objective to expose school children to Indian classical music. Designed in the traditional guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) format, each day’s schedule at the convention has been designed keeping in mind the ‘gurukul’ system of education, a member of the organising committee said.

Lucknow: UP Hindi Sansthan to confer Bharat Bharti Samman to Gopal Das Neeraj

Noted poet Padma Vibhushan Gopal Das Neeraj has been conferred with the Bharat Bharti Samman by the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan. The award carries with it a cash prize of R5.02 lakh, along with a citation and angvastra. The Lohia Sahitya Samman, which also includes R4 lakh cash prize, has been conferred on Chauthi Ram Yadav. The Hindi Gaurav Samman will be given to Som Thakur, Mahatma Gandhi Sahitya Samman to Mannu Bhandari, Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Samman to Baldev Vanshi and Avanti Bai Samman to Chitra Mudgal. All winners receive cash prizes of R4 lakh.

Lucknow: LMC to penalise private hospitals for not filing daily birth-death data  

Private hospitals and nursing homes of the city will now have to send all the birth and death data to the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) online on the same day, failing which the corporation would penalise them. For better coordination, the LMC has called a meeting of nursing home and hospital owners on Thursday.
