Sharif campaigned in Balakot, undeterred by the EC's rejection of his papers.

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has begun his election campaign seemingly undeterred by the Election Commission’s rejection of his nomination papers.

Addressing party supporters at Balakot in northern Pakistan, Sharif said he was campaigning for a level playing field ahead of the January 8 elections, all – as he put it – to save Pakistan.

"Today, I am fully confident that they (the Election Commission) have rejected my nomination papers,” Sharif told his supporters.

“I have told them you can reject my nomination papers a hundred times, but I will come back a hundred-fold with new zeal to serve my nation,” he announced.

This comes in the wake of Sharif’s statement that he does not aspire to become Prime Minister again.

Sharif and Benazir agreed to form a united front to boycott the elections, late on Tuesday. Sharif said that conditions should be set for free and fair polls and boycotting the elections is the only other way to end the “dictatorship” in Pakistan.

"Rigging in the elections is certain and fair polls cannot be held in the present situation," Sharif had said.

Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaaf party would also be a part of the group.

Sharif has kept up his demand that the judges deposed by President Musharraf be reinstated.
