The killer of 24-year-old Ashwini, estranged wife of a Bangalore-based techie, was not a stranger but someone she knew and wanted to marry, according to the police.
Police Commissioner K L Sudheer told reporters on Saturday that Raghu, a cook at a local restaurant and key accused, befriended Ashwini seven months ago through a common friend Ravi and soon the friendship turned into a relationship.
The night before the incident, Raghu and his friend Shekar who were arrested on Saturday, hatched a plan to kill Ashwini and rob her jewellery.
They entered Ashwini’s house in JP Nagar after learning that her parents were out of town.
While they were there, Ashwini’s aunt who stays close by, visited her to give her company. Ashwini didn’t want her to know about the presence of the men, and served her coffee laced with sedatives to make her sleep.
Later, Raghu and Ashwini slept in one room while Shekar slept in the other.
The following morning, on August 7, the three had lunch after her aunt left. Afterwards, Raghu blindfolded Ashwini saying he had a surprise gift for her and he and Shekar tried to smother her with a pillow.
Ashwini, who was well built, resisted and Raghu pulled out a pen knife with which he slit her neck, killing her instantly. Raghu and Shekar then fled with jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh, the police added.
The Commissioner said it was a case of breach of trust. Ashwini, who was separated from her husband Sunil Kumar within a month of their marriage two years ago, wanted to marry Raghu after getting a divorce. She had even introduced him to her mother.
She was taking care of Raghu’s financial needs.
Sudheer said they had earlier stolen a motorcycle and had unsuccessfully tried to burgle the house of the owner of Bhandari Medicals. They were arrested when they tried to burgle the house again.
