KARWAR: The political leadership should function with greater responsibility and the executive should be pro-people to fulfil the aspirations of the laymen, observed Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri. Unfurling the national flag on the police parade ground here on Monday, he said although the country had made greater strides on the path of development and emerged a powerful country in the world, the basic problems like poverty and unemployment still remained a challenge. Casteism and untouchability are still prevalent. The corruption has been going on rampantly. Under the circumstances the civic movement launched by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev looked more relevant to create awareness among the common people against these social evils.He said many villages were still deprived of basic facilities. More effort was needed to improve these facilwities. He said there was need for reforms in education also. Universalisation of education was a bold step in this direction. He said the BJP government in the state was development centric in the past three years. As a result the state was ranked second in the matter of development today. The government under the leadership of DV Sadananda Gowda would strive to achieve number one rank in the country in the field of development.Recalling great sacrifice made by Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders to get freedom, he said that they should be the sources of inspiration for the younger generation to protect the sovereignty of the country. He said the attempts of a few foreign forces to weaken the country with the help of divisive forces within the country should be thwarted. Therefore, all should unite and fight to uphold the dignity and integrity of the country.Earlier, Kageri received the salute from the police, home guards and NCC cadets. He inspected the parade and also march past. Mass drill by the school children was attractive. The students scoring high marks in SSLC and PUC examinations, candidates successful in civil service examinations and those, who had made outstanding contribution in different fields were honoured on the occasion. The schools with cent per cent results in SSLC examinations were also given awards.Deputy Commissioner BN Krishnaiah, ZP CEO, Vijaymohanraj, SP Shivprasad, municipal president Ganapati Ulvekar and many prominent citizens were present.
