The Government Engineering College, Barton Hill here, in association with Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of Daimler, will set up a state-of-the-art Automotive Mechatronics centre at the college.
The centre, the first-of-its kind in south India, will offer an Advanced Diploma course in Automotive Mechatronics (ADAM) of one-year duration starting from academic year 2013-14. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the programme was signed by Mercedes-Benz India with Government Engineering College Barton Hill at a function held in Kochi the other day.
Devdutta Chandavarkar, Director - After Sales, Raghunandan Pendse, General Manager - Legal Affairs from Mercedes-Benz signed on the behalf of the company, whereas J Letha, Director of Technical Education, Government of Kerala, and Sheela S, College Principal, signed on behalf of the college.
Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, Higher Education Principal Secretary K M Abraham, Kerala University Vice-Chancellor A Jayakrishnan, IISER Director Jermis, AICTE Member Secretary Kuncheria P Isaac and Joint Secretary Sherif M were present.
Automotive Mechatronics is a new field of specialisation; emerging from the combination of mechanical, electrical, computer and applied control engineering.
ADAM course will be offered under the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) of the college. The initial plan is to start the course with a single batch of 20 students and the selection of candidates will be strictly as per merit in an entrance test conducted by the College under the supervision of Mercedes-Benz. Engineering degree/ diploma holders are eligible to appear for the entrance test.
Certificates for the successful students shall be jointly signed by the authorities of the college and the company. Successful engineering students, who will be trained on Mercedes Benz high-end cars, will be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Automotive Mechatronics.
The syllabus and curriculum for the course will be as per the Mercedes-Benz Mechatronics School, which was launched in 2002 at the company’s manufacturing campus at Chikan, near Pune.
The Automotive Mechatronics course designed by Mercedes-Benz is being run by two government polytechnics in Pune and Aurangabad since 2006 and 2009 respectively.
