Maoist-backed PCPA's leader arrested in Bengal
PCPA Secretary Manoj Mahato was reportedly arrested by West Bengal Police at Birkar village in Lalgarh.

Kolkata: A top leader of the Maoist-backed People's Committee Against Police Atrocities has reportedly been arrested in West Midnapore district. PCPA Secretary Manoj Mahato was reportedly arrested by West Bengal Police at Birkar village in Lalgarh on Saturday.

Mahato was a PCPA spokesperson and became the Maoist-backed group's secretary following the killing of another senior leaderm Sidhu Soren.

He is the cousin of jailed PCPA convenor Chhatradhar Mahato and was arrested policemen in plain clothes from his ancestral home at Birkar, his mother Durga Mahato claimed.

"We immediately went to the camp and requested the officers to allow us to meet Manoj, but they said he was taken to Midnapore," she said, adding the family will now approach the Lalgarh police.

In Kolkata, West Bengal Home Secretary Samar Ghosh denied that Mahato had been picked up.

West Midnapore's Superintendent of Police also said, "I don't have any information on this."

Chhatradhar Mahato was also arrested from the same village in September 2009. PCPA has been accused of carrying out the derailment of Gyneshwari Express between between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations, about 135 km from Kolkata, in which over 150 people were killed and 200 others injured.
