When you’re juggling cross-country photo shoots and a chain of beauty salons, it can make you want to pull your hair out — even if you are in the fashion business. Hair and make-up artist Manzoor Khan admits to having been there and felt that, “It gets really mad sometimes!”, he says. The Mumbai-based glam stylist was in Chennai recently to create some new looks for actor Suriya for the commercial of a cement brand that the actor is endorsing. He reveals, “We had some fun looks for Suriya.” These include a bunch of funky avatars to suit the brand’s ad campaign, ranging from the “cool engineer” to smart-casual and even a robotic appearance, where the actor will be seen sporting silver streaked hair. Now, that is bound to be an interesting look for his fan base. “This was possibly one of my best shoots,” shares Manzoor enthusiastically. “I didn’t realise that I was working with such a big star for a while,” he elaborates. “He (Suriya) is so humble and friendly with his team – it was fantastic.”
In the business for 15 years now, this face artist has worked with everyone from MS Dhoni to Katrina Kaif and even Genelia D’Souza. Clearly, the man has ‘brushed’ against a diverse range of styles. While fashion trends and what’s in or out this season, do tend to take up most of his time, the Mumbai-based stylist admits that character-oriented make-up is always an intriguing prospect. “I’d definitely like to work with an actor like Kamal Haasan,” he states, citing the film Dasavatharam as an example. “It would be very interesting to do make-up for experimental roles.” Not that he hasn’t had his fair share of challenges on the job, though. When asked about what has been his biggest make-up nightmare, Manzoor shoots off, “A non-co-operative actor.” Sadly, there are no juicy details tinged with anonymity to accompany this response.
The conversation then takes a turn towards travel, and comparisons in work culture — between the North and the South. Manzoor points out, “There are quite a few stylists and technicians from the South who come over to Mumbai, so culturally it’s a good mix.” He goes on to stress, “But the directors and cameramen that I’ve had the opportunity to work with from the South are just brilliant.” So are there any projects in particular that are keeping him busy at the moment? The style guru reponds suggestively, “I am actually on the look out for the right kind of person to handle my franchise of salons in Chennai.” So far, the make-up expert has four salons in Mumbai and one in Hyderabad. He adds, “We’re also in the process of setting up an academy in these cities, which should be in place by December.” With the wedding season around the corner, Manzoor shares his tips for brides-to-be generously. “I’d say go with bright eyes – blues, gold, bronze,” he suggests. But later advises , “Keep the foundation light and natural.” As for the grooms, here’s hoping that you don’t need any parlour duty.
