CHENNAI: A 54-year-old AIADMK worker, who was expelled from the party, set himself afire on Marina Beach on Wednesday and later succumbed to his burns at hospital. Sources said M Nagendran, a native of Usilampatti in Madurai, was an officer-bearer in the local AIADMK unit, until he was expelled from the party some time ago. He had arrived in the city last week to meet Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.On Wednesday, around 6.40 am, he doused his body with fuel and set himself ablaze behind MGR memorial on Kamarajar Salai. Locals rushed him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he died an hour later. In a suicide note, Nagendran said that he had been a member of the party for 40 years and was a fierce MGR loyalist. He alleged that he was relieved of his party post and later expelled from the AIADMK due to the conspiracy of some persons, who prevented him from making a re-entry. Police suspect the accused could be one of the students studying in the engineering college.The victim, Toulath Nisha (39), reportedly opposed the love affair of her daughter with the son of a traffic constable attached to the Pallavaram police station. Following heated arguments with the assailant, Nisha screamed for help. She lived on the second floor of the two-storey building located behind the college auditorium. Some neighbours, who saw the assailant running towards the ground floor, rushed to her help and found the woman lying in a pool of blood. She was alone when the incident happened, as her husband Jiyajuddin had gone to the college library. Her two daughters too were away at their schools. Police, who arrived at the spot, sent Nisha’s body to government hospital in Chromepet for autopsy.2 Held for History Sheeter’s MurderTwo persons were arrested in connection with the murder of a rowdy at Kotturpuram on Monday. The police said R Vinod Kumar (23) and M Ramkumar (23), both from MGR Nagar, were arrested for hacking to death Karthik of Jafferkhanpet, an accused in the murder of rowdy Murali at MGR Nagar and released on bail a week ago. The car in which the duo arrived at the spot to carry out the crime was seized. On Tuesday, MGR Nagar inspector Kalaiselvan was placed under suspension for allegedly failing to heed the warning of the State intelligence wing that an attempt could be made on Karthik by members of Murali’s gang.
