CHENNAI: A 54-year-old AIADMK worker, who was expelled from the party, set himself afire on Marina Beach on Wednesday and later succumbed to his burns at hospital. Sources said M Nagendran, a native of Usilampatti in Madurai, was an officer-bearer in the local AIADMK unit, until he was expelled from the party some time ago. He had arrived in the city last week to meet Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.On Wednesday, around 6.40 am, he doused his body with fuel and set himself ablaze behind MGR memorial on Kamarajar Salai. Locals rushed him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he died an hour later. In a suicide note, Nagendran said that he had been a member of the party for 40 years and was a fierce MGR loyalist. He alleged that he was relieved of his party post and later expelled from the AIADMK due to the conspiracy of some persons, who prevented him from making a re-entry. The car in which the duo arrived at the spot to carry out the crime was seized. On Tuesday, MGR Nagar inspector Kalaiselvan was placed under suspension for allegedly failing to heed the warning of the State intelligence wing that an attempt could be made on Karthik by members of Murali’s gang.
