Live: Plane with Sanaullah's body takes off for Pak

Chandigarh: 9.05 pm: Pakistani prisoners in high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu have gone on 'fast' protesting against the death of Sanaullah Haq at a hospital in Chandigarh on Thursday. "Pakistani prisoners here (in the jail) have not taken food in afternoon... we are pursuing them," an officer of the state Prisons department said.

7:05 pm: The special plane with Sanaullah Haq's body takes off from Chandigarh for Pakistan.

5.25 pm: Body of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Haq handed over to authorities from Islamabad. Aircraft to take off at 5.30 pm.

4.20 pm: Pakistan aircraft would land at 5:25 pm. Pakistani officials say it will take off within 10 minutes of landing provided all airport clearances are done on time.

2:46 pm: India grants Pakistan clearance for special flight to Chandigarh to take back mortal remains of Sanaullah Haq.

1:05 pm: Pakistani prisoner Sanullah Haq's family is at Chandigarh hospital and his body will be formally handed over to Pakistan once the autopsy and other legal formalities are over.

12:26 pm: Pakistan government to send a special plane to collect Sanaullah Haq's body.

11:50 am: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sanaullah Haq's says, "It was the responsibility of Pakistan to take strong action against people whom attacked Sarabjit. I am not aware if Pakistan has taken any action. But the Jammu incident in response to attack on Sarabjit was not good, this should not have happened."

11:32 pm: Dalbir Kaur, sister of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh who died after he was brutally attacked in lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail, condemns the attack on Sanaullah Haq.

11:15 pm: Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde says, "I was informed that Sanaullah Haq has died this morning. His body will be taken to his home in Pakistan. We have not received any demand for an international inquiry by Pakistan into his death."

11:09 am: The Pakistan High Commission says Sanaullah Haq's body will be flown from Chandigarh to Lahore or Sialkot. Two Pakistan High Commission officials will escort the body alongwith two of Sanaullah's relatives.

11:05 am: MoS External Affairs Preneet Kaur says, "All Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails are being secured. I hope Pakistan, too, will reciprocate."

11:00 am Sanuallah Haq's family in Sialkot has been informed and his body will be handed over to Pakistan once the autopsy and other legal formalities are over.

10:59 am: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweets, "Although it's scant consolation I'd like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq & my sympathies for their loss."

10: 45 am: Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin says, "We tried to take all necessary measures to save Sanaullah. In touch with the Pakistan authorities. Will make all arrangements to facilitate handing over the body. Waiting for the details of the flight which will come from Pakistan."

Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah passed away at 6:30 am on Thursday at PGIMER, Chandigarh due to multiple organ failure, sources said. Sanaullah was injured in a scuffle with another inmate in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu on May 3. "The patient was brought in a brain dead condition and died this morning due to multiple organ failure," a hospital spokesperson said.

Pakistan High Commission Spokesperson Manzoor Memon requested India to make arrangements to send Sanaullah's body back to his country immediately. "We are in deep grief and shock. My deep condolence to the family of Sunaullah. We have requested the government of India for an international enquiry into the attack on the Pakistani citizen," Memon said while speaking to CNN-IBN. Memon has also said that there is a need of agreement on safety and security of prisoners in jails.

The hospital spokesperson said that it was a case of death in custody and a post mortem will be conducted for which a medical board is being constituted. "The post mortem will be conducted by the Medical Board in the presence of a Magistrate and videography will be done of the process," he said.

When asked about handing over of the body to the two relatives of Sanuallah, who arrived in Chandigarh on Tuesday from Pakistan, the official said that it was for the Chandigarh administration and the Union Home Ministry to decide. "The PGI will act on handing over of the body as per the instructions of the government," he said.

His condition had worsened on Wednesday following kidney failure and neurological problems. "Patient has become extremely critical. He has developed renal failure with no urine output since morning. Hence he was put on peritoneal dialysis by nephrologists," the bulletin issued on Tuesday evening said.

Sanaullah's relatives, brother-in-law Mohammed Sehzaad and nephew Mohammed Asif visited him on Wednesday for about 10 minutes in the Advanced Trauma Centre of PGIMER.

A resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, the 59-year-old prisoner was serving a life term after he was convicted under TADA provisions following his arrest in 1999.

The Pakistani prisoner was attacked a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The Pakistani High Commissioner Salman Bashir had visited Sanaullah on Monday and demanded an impartial probe into the attack. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says action has been taken against authorities at the Kot Balwal Jail where the attack occurred.

Meanwhile, Pakistan had advised its citizens travelling to India to exercise "due caution" following reports that their security "may be in jeopardy" after the attack on Sanaullah. "The Government of Pakistan wishes to advise its citizens who are planning to travel to India to exercise due caution and care while travelling to various parts of India," said a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

The two incidents triggered fresh tensions between the two countries. Earlier in 2013, bilateral relations were hit by a string of violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
