With a view to creating an awareness among customers on how to use LPG gas cylinders, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd organised a safety clinic at Vypeen Islands on Tuesday.

The awareness class threw light on every single precaution that has to be taken to avert mishaps. IOC general manager, Kerala, said that they had conducted about 40 safety clinics across the state.  “There are many issues now prevalent in the  state pertaining to LPG cylinders. Proper awareness can resolve the issue to quite an extent. IOC will continue to organise such safety clinics,” he said. The video representation, organised in this regard showed that one of the main  reasons for the accidents is the lack of proper knowledge while dealing with the LPG cylinders. Some facts which have to be kept in mind.

The cylinder should always be kept upright. Self repair is unsafe. Above all, no cylinder can burst except when cooking is done which means it would burst only if some external forces are in operation.  Things which can exert pressure on the cylinder should be kept away.

There is a tendency among people to throw and roll the cylinder. It should be avoided at any cost. If there is any gas leak, the regulator and the burner knobs have to be closed at the earliest. Extinguish all fires and flames. Do not light a match. Open all doors and windows immediately. If the smell persists, contact the distributor.

Detach the regulator from the cylinder. Fix safety cap on the valve. Remove the cylinder to a safe and ventilated place and do not bring any flame near the cylinder. Do not switch on or off electric switches while changing a cylinder.

Burner as well as regulator knobs have to be closed at nights. Changing rubber tube at least once in two years is a must. Besides, it should be checked regularly for cracks. Self repair is unsafe. Call distributor’s  mechanic.

Always retain safety cap with nylon thread attached to the cylinder.

Use the rubber hose which bears an ISI mark. The IOC authorities said they would suggest Green label stove and Suraksha tube instead of rubber hose. The main feature of the Suraksha tube is that it hardly develops fissure and has less chances to catch fire.

A Pandyan, IOC general manager, Kerala, and S  Rajendran, chief manager of Jnanasambandham were also present.  authorities get 'blasted', P3
