The bodies of four persons from the district, who were charred to death in the Tamil Nadu Express fire tragedy, were buried in their native village near Alangulam on Wednesday morning. Ponmani (30), her children Rosemary (7) and Jasmine (4), brother Thavamani (28) and mother-in-law Elizabeth (52) were travelling in the S-11coach of the ill-fated Tamil Nadu Express, which went up in flames at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh early Monday morning.

As Elizabeth’s body is said to have been claimed by another family, the bodies of the remaining four were brought from Nellore to their native Iynthamkattalai Muthumalaipuram. 

Relatives and villagers broke into tears as the bodies reached the village on Wednesday around 3.40 am in separate ambulances.

Alangulam Tahsildar Senthilvel paid floral tributes. After Ponmani’s husband David Raja reached the village, the bodies were buried. Elizabeth’s body would be handed over to relatives after a  DNA test, sources said. Alangulam MLA P  G Rajendran handed over a cheque for `4 lakh, (1 lakh per victim) as the State government’s compensation, to the family.

This apart, Sankarankovil MLA Muthuselvi gave away the State government’s compensation cheque for `1 lakh to the family of Special Officer (Cooperatives) Jaganathan from Sankarankovil, who was also charred to dead in the TN Expre-ss mishap.
