KOCHI: The land acquisition survey for the widening of Vyttila-Tripunithura-Pettah Road for the proposed Metro Rail project will begin on Monday. The survey will be carried out by a special team set up by the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) for land acquisition. The unit members include deputy tahsildars, village officers, surveyors and other officers related to the land acquisition process. A joint inspection will be conducted by the District Collector and the officials of the KMRL, the PWD and the Revenue Department.Earlier, the land owners in the area had protested against the land acquisition. The KMRL authorities said that a total of 30-metres width is necessary to construct the parking lots, a station and a median for the Metro rail. However, it is learnt that the district administration has already reached a consensus with the land owners in the area. “Accordingly, a minimum of 26 metres will be handed over by them. We will hold talks with them after the survey to convince them the necessity of maintaining 30 metres width for the roads,” said District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth. The KMRL is planning to complete land acquisition for the Metro rail project as different packages. A total of 32 hectares of land need to be acquired for the project and 292 buildings will have to be dismantled. Meanwhile, the Kerala Merchants Union said the acquisition of land on MG Road should be completed without confusion. “We have requested the authorities to give us a clear view on the area of land that has to be acquired for widening MG Road. The statements that have been given to us are contradictory to the details that we have obtained through an RTI. The authorities have promised us that they will soon provide us the necessary details,” said Merchants Union general secretary K A Shaji.
