KURNOOL/NALGONDA: Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of irrigation projects in the upper riparian states, reservoirs in the state continue to receive heavy inflows posing a threat to villages on the banks of Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers.As a precautionary measure, people from about 60 villages in Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar and Nalgonda districts have been evacuated to upper areas and more flood water released downstream.Heavy rains continued to lash Karnataka resulting in heavy inflows into the reservoirs on Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers which are flowing furiously and the reservoirs brimming with flood water.Jurala reservoir in Mahaboobnagar district is receiving about 5 lakh cusecs of Krishna water from the Narayanapur dam in Karnataka.The water level at Jurala reached 1,041.72 ft while the full reservoir level is 1,045 ft, forcing officials to lift 50 of the 62 gates up to a height of 2 metres to release about 5.1 lakh cusecs of water since evening.Following the release of flood water from Jurala in large quantities, Mahaboobnagar district authorities have alerted people living in about 40 villages downstream of the Krishna.Gurramgadda, Vasunagar, Maruthinagar, Jurala and nearby villages have been evacuated.Fishermen have been asked not to venure into the river.Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar officials have been alerted to ensure people on the banks of the two rivers are shifted to upper areas.People residing in Mantralayam, Nandavaram, C Belagal , Gudur, Kurnool , Nandikotukur, Kottapalli and other villages in Kurnool districts were also alerted by the Kurnool district officials.About one lakh cusecs of water is being released from the Tungabhadra dam.At 6 pm, the Srisailam reservoir was receiving nearly 5.39 lakh cusecs from Jurala and another 48,500 cusecs from Tungabhadra, taking the water level at the Srisailam dam to 883.7 ft while the full level is 885 ft.About 10 crest gates have been lifted 24 ft high and about 6.18 lakh cusecs of water is being released from Srisailam.Nearly 100 families have been shifted from Atluru village in Nalgonda district fearing inundation.The Nagarjuna Sagar project is receiving heavy inflows of about 5.38 lakh cusecs from Srisailam and the reservoir is discharging about 4.06 lakh cusecs after lifting 22 of 26 crest gates up to a height of 10 ft and the other gates up to 8 ft high.The current water level at Nagarjuna Sagar is 584.10 ft as against the full reservoir level of 590 ft.With all reservoirs almost full and the heavy discharge of flood water continuing, the generation of hydreoelectricity has reached its peak at 66.2 million units.According to APGenco officials, the peak hydel generation has reached 2,947 MW and the thermal power generation is 3,335 MW.
