KOTTAYAM: Six days after 75-year-old Thangamma was found murdered at her home in the heart of Kottayam town, police on Sunday said it had cracked the case by arresting Shajan Mathew, 45, a kin of the deceased. The police have recovered Rs 22,500 from the accused who had allegedly pledged the gold ornaments of Thangamma for Rs 30,000 with a bank, SP C Rajagopal told reporters here. Shajan Mathew of Illapungal House, Areeparambu, Mannarkadu, after getting drunk, had been to the house of Thangamma seeking `500 on the day of murder. When Thangamma refused his request for money, the accused turned violent and hit her with a sharp object, Rajagopal said.The police got a hint about the accused on the basis of the phone calls made by the victim to Shajan’s wife to settle a family dispute on the day of murder, the SP said. However, the police have not recovered the object which the accused used for the murder. The police have also not received the relevant papers to prove that the gold ornaments were pledged in a bank.
