KOCHI: Tasni Banu, who was in the news years ago for defying the fundamentalists in Malappuram and had opted to marry under the Special Marriage Act, received a bitter taste of moral policing after a group of miscreants abused and assaulted her near Infopark at Kakkanad near here on Sunday.The miscreants also warned her to remain off the roads during night and asked her not to follow the culture of Bangalore.The incident occurred on Sunday around 10.30 pm when Tasni, residing at Palarivattom, and her friend were returning from their job at a firm in the Infopark.The miscreants shouted at her: "We won't allow you to make this place another Bangalore where girls go out in the night and party.""Later four persons abused me using filthy language. When I questioned their behaviour, they assaulted me. We managed to get hold of one among the group and hand him over to the police," she said.While Tasni believes that the attack was carried out by some inebriated local youths, police suspect the role of fundamentalists behind the incident."We have collected certain information about the persons who attacked the girl. We will take them into custody soon," said Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police T R Prakash.The police on Tuesday recorded statements from Tasni, who has been hospitalised here with severe bruises on her neck and hand."Women are not safe in the streets of Kochi. The attack reflects the attitude of society towards women who have to go out during the night," she added.Police said they have identified Thajuddin, one of the attackers. He is said to be an autorickshaw driver.Tasni Banu, who belongs to the Muslim community, had hit the headlines about a decade ago when she decided to marry a rationalist under Special Marrige Act. At that time, Tasni Banu had to face the wrath of not only her parents but also a group of fundamentalists who imposed a house arrest on her and later ostracised her.
