Kaushik back as hockey coach, but row over team
Former captain Dilip Tirkey hasn't been included even among the 48 probables.

New Delhi: The Indian hockey team has a new coach Maharaj Kishan Kaushik, a man who has won an Olympic gold medal in 1998 Asian Games is now entrusted with finding a way to restore lost glory.

“A team has to be together, for one ness it requires to discuss everything openly and player should know, why they are selected and why they are not and once they know that performance is the only criteria, things will become easier,” says Kaushik.

Kaushik has spent the last few years as the coach of the women's team and taken them to some dizzying heights silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2006 Asiad.

Therefore it’s no surprise that the women’s federation is fuming that Kaushik has been snatched away without even informing them.

“He has played for the men's team and we can’t categorise Kaushik that he is a women’s coach,” says Indian hockey player, Ajitpal Singh

But there could be a controversy already brewing. Former India hockey captain Dilip Tirkey hasn't been included even among the 48 probables, despite Kaushik specifically asking for him.

The sports ministry is playing safe. “We are going ahead with our own function. The Indian Olympic Association, (IOA) has set up some sort of revolving body which it calls an ad hoc committee,” says Sports Minister M S Gill. He

Everyone needs to work together to revive Indian hockey and that has been the mantra of the Indian Olympic Association ever since it took over.

But Kaushik's appointment and dropping of Diilip Tirkey has opened a can of worms with the cracks within the IOA evident for everyone to see.
