The Madurai Judicial Magistrate V, Kannan, while remanding PRP Exports shareholder P R Palanichamy to judicial custody in connection with the illegal granite quarrying case, literally rapped the police for violating Supreme Court guidelines and producing the accused 24 hours after capture.
Palanichamy surrendered at the Superintendent of Police office in Madurai on Saturday afternoon. After conducting preliminary inquiries, the police produced Palanichamy before the Judicial Magistrate V (in-charge of the Melur Magistrate Court) at his house near Krishnapuram Colony around 7.30 pm. The Melur Magistrate was on leave.
Palanichamy’s lawyer Veerakathiravan filed a bail petition before the magistrate pointing out the delay of more than 24 hours in producing his client before the court. The Magistrate immediately called the Government advocate to file a reply but was shocked by the absence of the Government Pleader. He postponed the proceedings by one hour.
In the meantime, the police told the Magistrate that they arrested Palanichamy only on Saturday night. Later, the Magistrate remanded Palanichamy to judicial custody and asked the police to provide special care for his health.
Palanichamy grilled
In the morning, a special police team led by DSP Thanikavel escorted Palanichamy to the PRP Exports company premises at Therkutheru in Melur for an inquiry. Officials from the Revenue and Mining Departments were present. The seal on the three-storey building was broken and he was taken to his official chamber, where he was grilled by the team. “We have found some crucial files and documents relating to the illegal quarrying cases. These papers were seized by our team on the basis of Palanichamy’s statement. He has been cooperating well,” an official said.
The granite major was accused of grabbing huge tracts of land adjoining the quarries at Keelavalavu, Keelaiyur and the outskirts of Melur. Sources said land grabbing cases “may be booked against Palanichamy and his partners”. Evaluation work at Keelavalavu was expected to commence on Monday.
