A new 60-kilometre access-controlled road is coming up in Delhi that will offer connectivity to a number of expressways in the national capital, easing the flow of traffic in the city. The road, which will start from DND Maharani Bagh and end at Sohna, will ease the journey primarily for those who wish to take the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway from east Delhi or west Uttar Pradesh.

The new road, expected to be ready around the middle of the year, will connect the Delhi Noida Direct Flyway with the Western Peripheral Expressway, and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Delhi-Agra Expressway, and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Almost half of this project is already complete.

Another 30-kilometre section from this road will join the upcoming Jewar airport in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh.

Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday inspected the under-construction project, costing around Rs 4,500 crore, in the national capital.

THE PROJECT

The road starts near the DND Flyway, goes through the Faridabad-Ballabgarh bypass, and crosses NH-19 (old NH-2) near Kail Gaon in Haryana.

It terminates near the intersection of the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal segment of the Western Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Sohna.

Once completed, the project will provide direct connectivity to traffic originating from north and east Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and heading towards Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Mumbai on NH-48 (old NH-8) on one side and will provide access towards Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata through NH-19 (old NH-2) on the other. This will ultimately decongest the Delhi-NCR area, MoRTH believes.

This new road is being developed in three construction packages, of which one is already complete.

The work on the first part, starting at DND Maharani Bagh and passing through Khizrabad, Batla House, and Okhla Vihar on Yamuna river’s west bank, Canal Colony, and Jasola Vihar, started in January 2022. Its cost is around Rs 1,836 crore.

Currently, 73 per cent work has been completed and this nine-kilometre section is expected to be ready by July.

The second package will start near the junction with Jaitpur Pushta road and terminate at the one with the sector 62-65 dividing road of Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP).

The work has been underway since August 2021 with current physical progress at 83 per cent. This 24-kilometre section, being built for Rs 1,729 crore, is likely to be ready by May 2024.

The third and final 26-kilometre section of this road is already complete. Built at a cost of Rs 898 crore, this section starts near the sector 62-65 dividing road with Jaitpur Pushta road and terminates at the junction near the intersection of the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal segment of the Western Peripheral Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Sohna.

This urban project has eight elevated sections with a total length of 12 km. It also has ten flyovers and 13 minor bridges.

The under-construction 33 km section is being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana on a Hybrid Annuity Model for Rs 3,565 crore.

Throughout the 60 km section, the road will be a six-lane access-controlled highway with three-lane service roads on both sides in the brownfield stretch.

The alignment crosses over the Metro Line at four locations at a maximum height of about 27 m from the ground.

Further, a noise barrier will be installed along the elevated sections to minimise the effect of likely noise pollution and to protect the nearby Okhla Bird Sanctuary from any outside effects.

CONNECTIVITY TO JEWAR

Connectivity to the Noida International Airport in Jewar is also being developed linked to this alignment.

Another 31-kilometre-long segment will start towards the end of the second package and will ease the flow of traffic to and from the upcoming airport.

Being built at a cost of Rs 1,660 crore, the road towards the Jewar airport is expected to be ready by June 2025. Its current progress is around six per cent after work started in June 2023.
