Can DMK chief M Karunanidhi make a statement in 140 characters?
This was a doubt raised in a tweet as the 89-year-old politician forayed into Twitter under the handle ‘@Kalaignar89’, drawing a plethora of brickbats and bouquets, with some going for his jugular on day one itself.
Perhaps the oldest politician on Twitter, Karunanidhi, whose net savvy was hitherto a dark secret, has now given the term ‘social networking’ its modern day meaning even in his jargon.
But with a tweeple wondering (in Tamil) if it was a conspiracy by someone to finish off Karunanidhi as the site would offer a forum for criticism, there was a need to check if it was not a fake account, the confirmation was given by DMK’s South Chennai secretary, J Anbazhagan. He had been pondering over the idea for 10 days and gave his nod on August 13 night, Anbazhagan said and added that a dedicated team will manage the account, whose maiden tweet was on the just concluded TESO meet.
“Warm Welcome Thalaivare!”, tweeted actress Khushboo, but it was sarcasm that was overflowing as Karunanidhi got 1,560 followers. “Yaarai vittadhu...indha twitter!” (Who has the Twitter spared?), said one. “Welcome to one of TN’s greatest Machiavellis,” said another.
But other tweets reflected the public mood. “Now that youre on Twitter.. If you promise a TV I promise to follow you...’, “Tweet porattaum ellam nadathuvaangala?” (Will they stage tweet demonstrations?) and ‘Whoever follows me will get a free iPhone in next election’, were some of them.
