CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday inaugurated exclusive canteens for personnel of Tamil Nadu Police Department on the lines of Army canteens which provide tax-free essential commodities, at Avadi, Tiruchy and Madurai. Inaugurating the facilities through video-conferencing at the Secretariat, the CM said police personnel were striving hard for keeping the State as a garden of peace and they work round the clock for this.The CM has already earmarked a sum of Rs 1 crore for starting these canteens. All commodities sold in these canteens will have full exemption from VAT and will benefit police personnel, employees, retired employees and their family members and the families of the personnel who are no more.In the first phase, the tax-free police canteens have been set up at Regimental Centre in Avadi, First Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police in Tiruchy and Sixth Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police in Madurai. Meanwhile, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa also inaugurated medical service centres for police personnel in the armed police centres in 26 districts and Tamil Nadu Special Police centres in 10 places, at a cost of `1.2 crore.
