Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday charged that DMK staged the ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation only to hoodwink the people who hate their party over the land-grab charges, and to cover up the corruption charges being levelled against members of the family of DMK president M Karunanidhi.
“Though the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had ruled that preventive arrests could be made,I had instructed the police not to do so. Since imprisoning the DMK men who took part in the agitation would be a wasteful exercise for both the government as well as the police department, I directed the police to release those who were detained during the agitation; on my orders, all of them were released,” the CM said in a statement here.
Reiterating that complaints on land-grab charges were lodged even during the DMK regime, Jayalalithaa said the DMK regime did not take any action on these complaints since DMK men were involved in the crime.
“After the government headed by me assumed office, expeditious steps were taken to retrieve the lands grabbed during the DMK regime. It is quite normal that those DMK men who had grabbed the lands of others get affected by the action taken by the government,” Jayalalithaa observed.
