Srinagar witnessed massive protests against Pope following Friday prayers. Burqa-clad activists marched through streets.

Srinagar: Several groups staged protests on Saturday against the Pope's remarks on Prophet Mohammed. The radical women's organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat asked people to withdraw their wards from schools run by Christian missionaries.

Burqa-clad activists of the Dukhtaran marched through the streets in the heart of the city, carrying placards that condemned the Pope's comments.

Protest marches were also organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League and the Muslim Khawateen-e-Markaz, both members of the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Addressing protesters outside the Kashmir Valley's first missionary-run school, Tyndle Biscoe near the Lal Chowk, Dukhtaran chief Asiya Andrabi appealed to parents to withdraw children from schools run by Christian bodies.

Andrabi asked Muslims in Kashmir not to strengthen the hands of those who are against Muslims across the world.

A police contingent laid a cordon around the school as a precautionary measure. Passers-by joined the Dukhtaran activists in shouting slogans against the US and Israel.

Srinagar had witnessed protests against the Pope following Friday prayers. Police had then used batons to disperse the protestors and taken a dozen people into preventive custody.
