KOCHI: With contractors suspending renovation work of Government Ayurvedic Hospital every now and then since February, patients sleeping in the corridors has become a common sight. The renovation work was being carried out to accommodate more rooms in the hospital.According to the sources at the hospital, the administration has always turned a blind eye to the ayurvedic hospitals, especially, in terms of supplying funds.“Even now, the work has been suspended due to lack of funds. One day, contractors just stopped working and left it incomplete,” one of the sources said. This resulted in patients being forced to sleep in the corridors due to insufficient space. The renovation work of the dilapidated ayurvedic hospital building started in 2010, when the authorities realised that large numbers of people arrive at the hospital on a daily basis. However, due to lack of facilities, it has been difficult to provide much needed support to the people, a top official with the hospital said.According to a few sources, the authorities are yet to receive the funds for the hospital sanctioned by NABARD for the renovation work. The four-story building includes six pay wards, a women’s ward and a ward devoted to the senior citizens. However, works of none of the wards have been completed.District Panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappally said, “We are waiting for the government to sanction us the required funds for this year. The sanction for taking up the new project will take up additional two months. However, we were not aware of the suspended work until now,” he said.Another factor hindering the renovation work of the hospital is the delay in receiving sanction for a lift which is a requisite for all buildings having more than the three floors. “There is a slight delay in receiving the sanction for the lift due to technical reasons. We are hoping to receive the sanction soon,” said Eldhose.
