New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Thursday claimed that the figure of heinous crime in the city has decreased with their increased presence and visibility on the road.
Patnaik told CNN-News18 that Delhi Police performed well in 2017 and will continue to do so in 2018. This claim came on a day when data released by Delhi Police shows that crime in the national capital has increased by 12 percent.
According to the data shared by Delhi Police, 2, 23, 075 cases were registered in 2017 as opposed to 1, 99, 110 in 2016. The total Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes per lakh of population during 2017 was 1,263 in comparison to 1,137 in 2016.
However, there is a decline in the cases of crime against women which comes as a contrast to Delhi’s image as a rape capital. Other heinous crimes like snatching, murder, dacoity and so on have also decreased.
“We particularly monitored a few heads of crime - heinous crimes, crime against women. If you consider these categories there is a healthy decline with respect to 2016. This is because of general increase in police presence, patrolling and also because we took specific measures in certain crime prone areas,” Patnaik said.
The one area the police failed to deal with has been traffic. During the annual press conference of Delhi Police, the Traffic Department’s head said the National Capital Region has become extremely congested while the population has also increased dramatically. The New Year began with Delhiites getting stuck to massive traffic jams for hours in and around central Delhi.
When asked about traffic woes of Delhi, Patnaik said, “There is an exponential increase in vehicular population as compared to the availability of road networks.”
He said that if we want an improvement in traffic system, other agencies will also have to help the traffic department.
“For future improvement in traffic management a holistic approach is to be taken in which other agencies will also have to chip in. They will have to extend their cooperation to traffic police for which there is a task force constituted under L-G and that is constantly monitoring the improvement along with technological up gradation,” he said.
“We are going to see how best the force can be technologically upgraded. We have inducted a Chief Technological Officer. Delhi Police is probably the only force to have a CTO. Together we will keep our focus on safety of women, street crime and other areas,” Patnaik added.
