Cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, on Tuesday, challenged in the Supreme Court the appointment of former Interior Secretary Qamar Zaman Chaudhry as the chief of Pakistan's anti-corruption watchdog.

Khan, chief of the opposition Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, appealed to the apex court to declare Chaudhry's appointment as chairman of the National Accountability Bureau's chairman as illegal and to remove him.

His lawyer Hamid Khan submitted a constitutional petition challenging the appointment. The government and the NAB chief were made respondents in the application.

The petition claimed Chaudhry's appointment violated the the NAB Ordinance and all necessary legal requirements to appoint the chairman had not been met.

Earlier on October 9, the ruling PML-N and the opposition Pakistan People's Party had agreed to appoint Chaudhary.

The post of NAB Chairman was lying vacant since May 28, when the Supreme Court had sacked its former head, Admiral (retired) Fasih Bukhari.
