ERODE: Six members of a family tried to immolate themselves near the Erode SP office here on Wednesday. They were protesting against the police for not taking proper action in the suspicious death of a youth belonging to the family.Almost eight months ago, Thyagarajan (18), son of Govindan and Saroja of Anna Nagar at Sathy, was found dead near Bhavani riverbed in the town. At that time, police registered a case under Sec 174 (suspicious death) of the Indian Penal Code.His parents, who are casual labourers, suspected that Thyagarajan was murdered by his friends Prakash, Arun and Kathir and lodged a complaint with the Sathy Police. But, the police allegedly did not consider their complaint. “When we lodged the complaint raising suspicion over the death, the police did not take any action. They even did not give a proper reply to our query,” said a relative of Thyagarajan.Around 11.30 am on Wednesday, the youth’s parents and relatives came to the office of the Superintendent of Police carrying a can with kerosene and tried to enter the premises. But, policemen, led by town Deputy Superintendent of Police Danapal, stopped them near the all women police station.Meanwhile, some of the relatives doused themselves in kerosene. But, the police prevented them and later arrested seven persons, including Dalit Liberation Party district secretary Gobi. The town police have registered a case.
