IFFI 2014: Boredom, lack of will power stop one from being unique, says Anupam Kher
During his masterclass at IFFI, Anupam Kher explained why there is no single, determined route to becoming an actor.

Panaji: While everybody knows that being an actor calls for determination, passion and dedication, only a few can understand the difference between an actor being respected and popular. During his masterclass at the 45th International Film Festival of India, Anupam Kher explained why there is no single, determined route to becoming an actor.

"For the viewers to relate to an actor, he ought to be honest while performing his role. Why do you think the first film of every actor works? Because this is the first time actors emote in a certain way. In addition to hard work, being an actor also requires an unbelievable amount of patience. Actors are paid for their patience levels. Not so much for talent, it comes later. It can take 45 minutes or even an hour when you have to FILM two shots. And actors have to ensure that he is concentrating throughout the shoot. While filming tragedy is still easy, difficulties surface for comedy because the timing is important," he said.

With the spurt in the alternate sources of entertainment, pressure on the actors to perform better is expected to intensify. "The viewers have so many sources of entertainment - from cinema halls to games parks, restaurants, 300 movie channels. So it becomes important for actors to concentrate, work honestly to ensure they are brilliant," he explained.

Anupam also explained the need for actors to understand why everything about mediocrity is unsafe. "If you are competent you can never be brilliant. So every time you have to be brilliant, you have to start from scratch. It is our own mediocrity which makes us happy with mediocrity. Actors get the idiotic liberty to feel important, but there is huge difference between popularity and respect. Everybody in 'Bigg Boss' is very popular, but do we even remember who won the show a couple of years back? It is movies that affect one's psyche," he said.

Anupam also admitted to have done projects that were mediocre. "I have done 488 films, most are good, some bad and some even mediocre. But that's because I decided to be good, bad and mediocre. For the last year, I have chosen to be brilliant because I feel why should I be a mediocre when I can be brilliant. So the key idea is to be honest and work extra hard. There is no alternate but to be brilliant. And the same applies to acting too. It is your own boredom, lack of will power and hard work that stops you from being unique. The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that 'extra'. You have to add a little extra to stand out. You remember actors by their performances, not by the crores they make. You don't remember crores, but honesty of filmmakers, actors and technicians," he added.
