IBNLive Movie Awards: Nominees for Best Actress
It was the year when viewers accepted women in more meaty roles in films.

New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.

It was the year when viewers accepted women in more meaty roles in films and rejected those who were used as props in the films. It was the year that a supposed 'non-actor' like Deepika Padukone delivered four back to back hits. It was the year when a theatre artist like Nimrat Kaur made a mark in the film industry with her simple, beautiful portrayal of a housewife. It was also the year when the very commercial Sonakshi Sinha proved her critics wrong with her sublime performance.

Here are our best actress nominees.

Deepika Padukone (Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram leela): 2013 was clearly Deepika Padukone's year. She had four releases and all of them were super hits. Deepika's performance in each film ('Race2', 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', 'Chennai Express' and 'Ram Leela') was varied from the other yet extremely convincing. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Ram Leela' had Deepika playing feisty Gujarati girl who isn't afraid to run away with the enemy all for love.

Nimrat Kaur (The Lunchbox): Newcomer Nimrat Kaur stole our hearts with her act in 'The Lunchbox'. Nimrat's performance was restraint, innocent and one could not imagine anyone else but Nimrat playing Ila, a bored housewife longing for companionship and happiness.

Adia Al-Khashef (Ship Of Theseus): It was a difficult role to play. But newcomer Adia Al-Khashef made it look simple with her captivating performance as a blind photographer who doesn't quite adjust to her new found ability to see things. Though her vision is restored post surgery, Adia's is seen dissatisfied with her work as a photographer.

Sonakshi Sinha (Lootera): Someone should give meatier roles to Sonakshi Sinha. There is more to her than just being a glam quotient in action films. Sinha gave a brilliant, restraint performance in Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Lootera' which surprised one and all.

Konkona Sen (Ek Thi Dayan): Konkona Sen, who has proved her acting prowess by bagging national award twice, needs no introduction. Even though 'Ek Thi Dayan' didn't manage to be as intriguing as the viewers had expected, Konkona's powerful and effortless acting played a key role in building up the mystery in the film.
