New Delhi: The players' auction of the highly anticipated Indian Badminton League (IBL) was supposed to take place on July 19, but it has been postponed to July 22 on the request of the six franchises.
As per media reports, the franchises needed time to prepare for the auction by setting up a workshop to be better prepared.
Earlier on Thursday, IBL confirmed that the Mumbai franchise has been jointly bought by legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, South Indian actor Nagarjuna and the Hyderabad-based businessman. On Wednesday, the Burman family (promoters of Dabur Group), who also happen to own the Mumbai franchise of the Hockey India League, became the proud owners of the Pune franchise - Pune Vijetas.
The tournament that is going to be held in six states across the nation will see participation from Hyderabad HotShots, Karnataka Kings (Bangalore), Lucknow Warriors, Mumbai Masters, Pune Vijetas and Rajdhani Smashers (Delhi).
The IBL, that will be held between August 14 and 31, features 90 matches. About 150 players are going to be a part of the auction to fill the 66 available spots. Indian stars Saina Nehwal, Ashwani Ponappa, Jwala Gutta, Parupalli Kashyap, PV Sandhu and a yet-to-be-named foreign player are the six iconic players with a base price of $50,000.
Each team will have 11 players, with a maximum of four foreigners and one manadatory under-19 player from the local catchment area.
