New Delhi: At midnight, security agencies got a tip off about Lashkar commander Abu Dujana's presence through TechInt (technical intelligence). Among the various phone numbers under surveillance, Dujana's suddenly became active at midnight. This set off alarm bells and prompted forces - 182 and 183 battalions of CRPF, 55 RR of the Army and a unit of police's SOG - to come right down to Hakripora village at 4 in the morning.
“Dujana has a knack of slipping past our cordon. He's done that more than half-a-dozen times now. So we came to Hakripora village and laid a cordon. By 4 in the morning, the place was pretty much sealed," said a senior police officer.
The official added that for a moment there was a doubt that the man they had zeroed in was actually Dujana or not.
"There was no stone pelting till 8 am and this raised doubts amongst us. A man like Dujana was likely to be protected by the entire village. He has huge sympathy among locals. So we double-checked our TechInt and confirmed it through our human intelligence sources also. That's when we launched the offensive. The militants refused to surrender, so we've set fire to the house, in order to flush them out. All our information points that it is Dujana but let's wait till we recover the bodies," the officer added.
Sources have said the Lashkar commander and his aide were killed after being trapped in the debris. Bodies of both the terrorists have been recovered and are said to be partially charred.
Dujana, a Pakistan national, was the chief of Lashkar's operations in Kashmir. His death is being viewed as the one of the biggest success stories for security forces this year. Dujana had a Rs 30 lakh prize on his head.
Abu Ismail, a LeT commander who planned and executed the recent attack on Amarnath Yatris, is believed to be a close associate of Dujana. Ismail is touted to be the successor of Dujana.
