New Delhi: Former world number ones registered easy wins in the first round of the Hamburg Masters on Tuesday.
Playing in this tournament for the first time since 2004, former world number one Australian Lleyton Hewitt whipped Argentine Augustin Calleri in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In another match, Russian Marat Safin beat Chile's Nicolas Massu 7-6, 6-4 to move into the second round.
"I'm getting better and better, hopefully, for the big tournaments, for Paris it will be even better. I still have a little bit of a chance here to make some good results, and I'm looking forward," Safin said after registering his first round win.
"If I manage to get through these kinds of matches, then it means my best game is around the corner, so hopefully that will start from this week, and from now on, and going through the big tournaments," the big Russian added.
The only seed to fall was Marcos Baghdatis, beaten 7-5, 6-3 by German Phillip Kohlschreiber.
