The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the CPM hit normal life hard in the district, with incidents of violence being reported from various areas. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed, while government offices registered thin attendance.

Two KSRTC employees were manhandled at Nedumangad and hartal supporters damaged the glass pane of a Maruti car in Maranelloor. In Kattakkada, four different cases were registered, including an attack on the station master’s office at the KSRTC depot and an attack on the Congress office. Incidents of violence were also reported from Neyyatinkara and Mangalapuram.

In Kerala University, the Syndicate members who came to attend a Syndicate meeting were stopped in front of the gate. The LDF Syndicate members also prevented Vice- Chancellor A Jayakrishnan from entering the office.

However, the Syndicate meeting was held with LDF members abstaining.

Kerala University employees, including women who came to report for duty, had to face the wrath of the hartal supporters in front of the  University office. A woman employee was not allowed to report for duty and was showered with abuses by CPM activists, who surrounded her. Though police were present in large numbers, no one came to the rescue of the lady.

In Killipalam, the hartal supporters pelted stones at and also damaged the furniture at the Education Deputy Director office.

In the city, the KSRTC buses did not operate any service after 5 am and private vehicles other than two-wheelers kept off the road. A large number of people were stranded at the Railway Station and KSRTC bus stand.

Relatives of those who were admitted at various hospitals in the city had a tough time as some of the eateries that were opened in the morning were forced to down shutters by CPM activists.

CPM and CPM feeder organisations took out marches in support of the hartal in various parts of the city.
