THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city Corporation’s Works Standing Committee has urged the State Government to urgently disburse Rs 2.64 crore required for public works and installation of street lamps for the upcoming Attukal Pongala.The State Government had earmarked Rs 12 crore for the Attukal Development Committee for the Attukal Development Project in the current budget. But this sum has not been spent so far.The Corporation, in view of the annual festival, has prepared public works and street lamp works estimated at Rs 2.64 crore, works standing committee chairman and LDF parliamentary party leader in the corporation V S Padmakumar and ward councillor C Jayan said in the statement.The Attukal Development Committee is constituted by including the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation wards of Attukal, Manacaud, Kalippankulam, Chala, Nedungad, Karamana, Kalady, Valiyasala, Fort, Thiruvallam, Pappanamcode, Kuriathy, Kamaleswaram, Melamcode, Thampanoor, Ambalathara, Arannoor and Mutthara.The selection of wards had, in fact, created some ruckus in the Corporation council on Wednesday. Councillors representing Perunthanni, Palkulangara, Sreekanteswaram and Sreevaraham wards argued that many of the wards included in the committee, were in fact, less important to the conduct of the Pongala than theirs, they said.
