BELLARY: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah has alleged that the BJP government has not taken the drought prevailing in the state seriously.Speaking to reporters during his visit to drought-affected Halakundi village in Bellary taluk on Wednesday, he said the government had failed to come out with a plan to face the problem. More than 50% of the taluks were reeling under severe drought and the number was expected to increase due to insufficient rain, he said.If the government was serious, it would have alerted officials to be prepared to face the situation. But the government was more concerned about implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he said.Scanty rainfall in the district had affected the crops like groundnut, bajra, maize, cotton and sunflower, resulting in losses of yield to the tune of 75-80%. The agriculture department officials had estimated the loss at Rs. 125 crore in Bellary district alone during this Kharif season, he said.He expressed concern over the worsening condition with regard to fodder, drinking water and farm operations for the Rabi season in view of the drought-like situation.
