CHENNAI: There is no getting around it — shopping is one of the most interesting forms of entertainment that people enjoy during the festive season. For the 13th consecutive year, Rang Mahal is representing the conglomeration of Bengal Weavers from Nadia district, Bengal. It is showcasing handpicked Bengal handloom saris and dress materials at Chetpet Hall, 165/74, TTK Road, Alwarpet. The exhibition-cum-sale is on till October 23. The yarn (out of which the saris are made) is available in various colours. From crimson reds to lilac pinks, aquamarine blues to pista greens, peaches and plums, ivory white. The Kapas cotton yarn refined with inimitable weaves render sophistication and lightness to the fabric. The artisans have put in a lot of effort to make the broad categories of Bengal Handloom i.e. Tangail Nakshi Border Saris, Baluchar Embossed Cotton Saris, Butadar Saris and Jamdani Dhakai Saris extremely eye catching (range `520 to `6000). Floral and geometrical motifs, tribal and landscape motifs in the erstwhile handloom backdrop make the saris or dress materials most non-conformist. Experimental, challenging and radical are the key words to symbolise the 2011 Bengal Weavers’ Display at Chettiar Hall. The Dhakai Jamdani Saris continue to be in demand for its detailed patterns especially along the border. This year, the Tangail Nakshi Border Saris with innovative concept detailing in the jacquard woven border like a flower nestled among leaves, a trellis in the womb of the paisley— spell wonder for the budge-savvy women (`680 and above). The Dhakai Butadar sarees with simplistic geometric extraweft motifs scarcely woven in body and end piece is of overriding appeal for every-day use. However, the most offbeat, economic stylewear is the simplistic Jamdani sarees with endpiece and blouse piece in identical colour, in contrast to opposite colour gossamer background. Along with its comfort element, the weavers have amalgamated stylist adaptations, that is, block printing, hand painting, Nakshi Kanthas allied needlework embellishments along with traditional aestheism. For the first time, block impressions have been made on two ply resham (woven silks) with hand tie and dye in contrast colours – surely this will be the most sought after product this year. (Range: `3000 and above). The dress materials the hues in ethnic motifs -- be it for salwar kameez, dupatta or kurti pyjama or orni (in long four-ply staple cotton yarn) will definitely tempt you to loosen your purse strings (Range: `980 and above).
