VISAKHAPATNAM: Gitam University has drawn up a 'Vision Document 2020' to be amongst the top 200 world class universities, university vice-chancellor G Subramanyam has said. For this, it plans to open an exclusive campus abroad in addition to another campus in the country soon, he said.The core idea of the document is to transform the university into a centre of excellence through appropriate initiatives and strategies.Speaking at a press conference here on Saturday, Subramanyam said Gitam was established in 1980 as a deemed university. The university's Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad campuses have 12,000 students and nearly 700 faculty. The varsity boasts of state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure.The university has a central library with all modern facilities. The library has 1.60 lakh books, e-learning resources, periodicals, and national and international journals.Gitam has a large, world-class data centre with a sophisticated wi-fi network that covers the entire campus. The wi-fi networks are capable of serving up to 15,000 students simultaneously, the vice-chancellor said.About 1,600 students were offered jobs through campus recruitment last year, he said."Currently, there are over 100 projects in progress in collaboration with several state and Central government departments like DRDO, ministry of defence and information technology and sciences," Subramanyam said. As part of its social responsibility, the university is offering full tuition fee waiver to top 10 rankers," he said and added that `5,000 is being paid as stipend to meritorious MTech students.
