BANGALORE: Acrimony was witnessed in the state Assembly on Thursday when members of the Opposition and Treasury benches traded charges against each other. This followed Leader of Opposition in Assembly Siddaramaiah’s strongly worded plea to the Chair to admit an adjournment motion for a debate on the Lokayukta report on illegal mining.Siddaramaiah made the appeal no sooner did the House assemble. In his preliminary submission, he alleged that the BJP government deliberately slept over the report.“The report submitted by former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde caused the resignation of former CM B S Yeddyurappa; former minister G Janardhana Reddy is in jail. A few others involved in looting state resources have been sidelined in the Sadananda Gowda-led Cabinet. Over 2.98 crore tonnes of iron ore was siphoned off, causing a revenue loss of over Rs 16,800 crore,” he asserted. Countering Siddaramaiah’s charges, BJP members, led by Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai, RDPR Minister Jagadish Shettar, retorted that illegal mining reached unprecedented levels during the Congress regime and the BJP government halted it.
