Flood situation grim in Koraput

Flood situation remained grim in different parts of Koraput as incessant rains continued for the third consecutive day on Monday.

At Kotpad block, the Indravati and its tributary Johra were still flowing above the danger mark. People of eight panchayats in Kotpad have been asked to shift as flood water may enter the villages any time.

Many other rivers are in spate disrupting normal life. The Koraput district has been cut off from neighbouring Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Chhattisgarh with rainwater flowing over culverts of national and State highways. As many as 30 culverts in Jeypore and Koraput have been washed away.

Heavy rains in hilly terrains have also raised the water level in rivers and their tributaries.

Official reports on Monday stated that flash floods have submerged over 10,000 hectares of paddy fields in Jeypore sub-division alone. Over 2,000 houses have been damaged at Jeypore, Kotpad, Koraput and Sunabeda areas.

The district administration has put officials on alert in Kotpad block where 10,000 people of Murtahandi, Sadaranga, Giral, Guali, Gumunda, Damanahandi, Chandili and Chatrala panchayats are caught in flood waters of the Indravati and the Johonra.

“As one river after another is touching the danger mark, we have put necessary emergency services in place to meet the exigencies,” said Borrigumma Tehsildar S Pradhan.

He added that so far no damage to life and property has been reported from any area.

Meanwhile, government offices and educational institutions recorded thin attendance owing to the rains on Monday.

Markets too remained closed in Jeypore sub-division. Here, district emergency officials informed that all revenue officials and disaster management staff have been asked to submit reports on damage at the earliest.

Polythene sheets and dry food have been distributed among those affected.
