Salgaocar got the better of JCT Mills by the narrowest of margins; Sporting Clube de Goa routed Army XI 4-0.

New Delhi: Salgaocar and Sporting Clube de Goa (SCG) on Tuesday won their respective matches to advance to the quarter-final of the Federation Cup Football Tournament in Kolkata.

They meet each other in the quarters for a place in the semis.

While Salgaocar got the better of JCT Mills (Phagwara) by the narrowest of margins, Sporting Clube de Goa (SCG) routed Army XI 4-0 at the Salt Lake stadium.

Francis Fernandes put Salgaocar in the lead in 58th minute when he headed in after a Rocus Lamarhe cross from the right.

The goal proved to be the only one of the match, as JCT could not find the equaliser.

JCT had an excellent chance in the dying seconds of the game when striker Baldeep had only the Goa goalkeeper to beat, but a defender brought him down.

However, the referee did not blow the whistle for a foul and JCT were denied a penalty.

Earlier Sporting Clube de Goa were clearly the better team and kept the pressure on their opponents right from the word go.

SCG went into the lead in only the 20th second of the game when Ernest Jeremiah scored.

After a lull of half an hour Harmanjot Khabra, who turned 18 on Monday, got his name on the score sheet twice when he found the back of the Army XI net in the 31st and 38th minute.

The fourth and the final game of the match came when Nicolau Borges scored in the 55th minute.
