New Delhi: It is a tragic situation in India that AIDS patients, in addition to having to deal with the disease, also often have to bear with being shunned by family and friends due to the stigma attached to the disease.
Shockingly, a woman in Latur has been shunned after her death as well.
Kalpana Nashe's relatives are refusing to conduct the last rites because she was an AIDS patient. Her body has been lying in the local hospital for two days now. Her husband refuses to acknowledge his wife even in death.
A local social organization has offered to conduct last rites on the body if Kalpana's family does not come forward.
“Our organisation decided to conduct the last rites. This shouldn’t happen to other AIDS patients. If family members don’t accept AIDS patients, it is a shame on humanity,” said social worker Hatim Sheikh Aman.
