The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday launched a probe against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh over ‘illegal construction’ of his four-storey residence in Kolkata, said officials.
The KMC served notice to Ghosh under Section 544 of the CMC Act, 1980, which gives the Municipal Commissioner and other authorised officers the power to enter and inspect land and buildings to ensure compliance with the Act, rules, and regulations of the corporation.
Located on Badan Ray Lane off CIT Road, the house has been under the spotlight of law enforcement agencies since multiple allegations of Ghosh’s involvement in the cover-up of the RG Kar rape and murder case and financial irregularities tumbled out of the closet in the aftermath of the incident on August 9.
The local residents reportedly said that Ghosh’s residence has illegal construction on the terrace and extension of the boundary wall. Acting on the complaint, the municipality launched a probe into the alleged construction irregularities.
Ghosh came under the scanner after the rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital on August 9, which sparked nationwide outrage demanding justice. At the time of the incident, Ghosh was the principal of RG Kar.
The former principal of RG Kar Medical College was arrested by the CBI for allegedly misleading evidence and delaying filing the FIR in the rape and murder case of the medic.
Ghosh has also been booked by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case pertaining to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during his tenure as principal.
