An elderly farmer suffered a massive heart attack while protesting at the Shambhu border near Haryana’s Ambala on Friday morning. He was rushed to the civil hospital in Punjab’s Patiala, but doctors declared him brought dead.
According to news agency PTI, 63-year-old farmer Gian Singh complained of chest pain in the morning and was taken to the Civil Hospital in Punjab’s Rajpura.
From there, he was rushed to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where doctors declared him brought dead, officials told the news agency.
Singh, who hailed from Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, arrived at the Shambhu border two days ago to participate in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march organised by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
The purpose of the march is to exert pressure on the government to meet farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Since Tuesday, the farmers have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders of Punjab and Haryana. Despite a third round of talks between farmer union leaders and the government on Thursday yielding no conclusive results, the next round of discussions is scheduled for Sunday.
