Egypt extended temporary detention of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi for 30 more days Thursday over charges of jailbreak, relevant murder as well as spying for the Palestinian Hamas movement, Xinhua reported.
On July 26, investigating judge Hassan Samir ordered 15-day detention of Morsi. On Aug 12, Morsi's detention was extended for another 15 days over the same charges, including spying for Hamas.
Thursday's decision came after visiting and interrogating the deposed president at his unannounced detention place, facing him with evidence that has been confirmed by the National Security Apparatus investigations.
The deposed president is accused of communicating with Hamas during January 2011 upheaval that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak and using the turmoil to assault police premises and officers, break into prisons and set fire to Wadi al-Natron Prison, where Morsi was jailed back then.
Morsi was ousted by popular-backed military procedures in early July and he has been detained ever since.
On Wednesday, the security forces dispersed two major sit-ins of Morsi's loyalists in Cairo and Giza. The dispersal operation and relevant clashes left at least 525 killed and about 3,717 injured nationwide, the health ministry said Thursday.
Due to the turmoil, Egypt announced Wednesday a state of emergency for one month and imposed a curfew in several governorates, including Cairo, Giza and Alexandria.
